Papers consist of letterpress copybooks, speeches, papers pertaining to St. Philip's (Episcopal) Church, genealogical materials, political and business papers, and other items. Letterpress copybooks (5 bound volumes, 1871-1922) include tissue copies of letters from Thomas W. Bacot and the firm of Walker & Bacot to relatives, clients, overseers, attorneys, city officials, and others regarding genealogical research, South Carolina politics, plantation affairs at Roadside Plantation, St. Philip's Church, estates and other legal affairs, and other matters. Two of the letterpress copybooks contain many letters to Mary Jane Ross from her attorney Edward McCrady and others concerning personal matters, finances, and her legal and business affairs. Speeches (1908-1924) include a handwritten draft (1908) of a lecture on the Powder Magazine (Charleston, S.C.). Papers pertaining to St. Philip's Church consist of notes, clippings, a plat, a list of rectors, drafts of a constitution and by-laws for the lay association, letters, and other items. Political papers (1876-1883) include a petition, a broadside, and a draft of a bill concerning child labor. Business papers (1882-1926) consist of accounts, stocks, conveyances, and letters. Genealogical materials, including notes, clippings, correspondence, and transcriptions of epitaphs, pertain to the Bacot, Lance, and Huger families and related families. Also included are genealogical papers of Josephine Rhett Bacot and D. Huger Bacot, Jr. regarding Rhett, Horry, and other family connections.

After receiving his doctorate from Harvard in 1922, he taught at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and at Temple University in Philadelphia (Pa.). Bacot was a proof reader, reviewer, and feature and editorial writer for The News and Courier (Charleston, S.C.) for 31 years. Charleston, South Carolina attorney, civic leader, and vestryman of St. Philips (Episcopal) Church. Born in 1802, McCrady was raised under the care of his grandfather William Johnson and was sent to Yale College at the age of fifteen, graduating in 1820.
