Papers consist of accounts and other material concerning cotton sales, household receipts and accounts, slave bills of sale, bonds, and correspondence, lists, and other documents pertaining to the Phoenix Rifles and the Phoenix Fire Company. Papers (1839-1880) pertaining to cotton sales include accounts and correspondence with William C. Murray, John Fraser & Company, Fraser, Trenholm & Company, Molyneaux, Taylor & Company, and others, invoices, shipping receipts, Liverpool (England) price listings, and a power of attorney. There are also some receipts, accounts, invoices, and correspondence pertaining to rice sales. Bacot family household receipts (1830-1902) are for clothing, furniture, medical services, drygoods, stationery, utilities, and groceries. There are also accounts (1884-1885) for groceries. Phoenix Fire Company papers (1853-1861) include notes regarding the administration and regulations of the company, letters, clippings, and other material concerning the company's trip to Memphis (Tenn.), lists of members, and a memorial concerning the history of the fire company. Phoenix Rifles papers (1860-1865) include correspondence, receipts, notes, rosters, and other items, including permits to visit restricted areas, letters, and a map (hand colored) of the "Seat of War."

The son of Thomas Wright Bacot (1795-1851) and Harriett Susannah Wainwright, Robert Dewar Bacot was president of the Phoenix Fire Engine Company, a volunteer firefighting company, and captain of the Phoenix Rifles, a volunteer militia unit raised just before the outbreak of the Civil War.
