Papers consist of correspondence, manuscripts of Bacot's writings, notebooks, and other items. Correspondence (1906-1932) of Josephine Rhett Bacot, from Charleston (S.C.) and Saluda (N.C.), is with family members, editors, publishers, and others including her brother, Walter Horton Rhett, sons Daniel Huger Bacot, Barnwell Rhett Bacot, and Walter Rhett Bacot, daughter-in-law Marie Thomas Bacot, and John V. Bacot of Utica, New York. Letters concern her attempts at publication, her childrens' education, jobs, and careers, Bacot family genealogy, and other matters. Manuscripts (holograph and typewritten) of Bacot's writings include essays, poems, three screenplays (1924) for silent films, and stories. A notebook contains clippings of poetry and articles with annotations, as well as poems by Bacot ("Hulda Leigh"), and another notebook contains drafts of essays and genealogical notes on the Rhett family. Non-fiction writings, including various editorials, cover subjects such as Charleston (S.C.) and St. Philip's Church (Charleston, S.C.). Fictional subjects include orphans, a Jewish girl, romance, and war. There is also a diary dated 1918.

Charleston, South Carolina writer. She was the granddaughter of Robert Barnwell Rhett (1800-1876), and her parents were Robert Barnwell Rhett II (1828-1905) and Josephine Horton. In 1888 she married Charleston (S.C.) merchant Daniel Huger Bacot (1847-1920). Their children included: Daniel Huger Bacot (b. 1888), Walter Rhett Bacot (b. 1899), and Barnwell Rhett Bacot (b. 1891). After receiving his doctorate from Harvard in 1922, he taught at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and at Temple University in Philadelphia (Pa.). Bacot was a proof reader, reviewer, and feature and editorial writer for The News and Courier (Charleston, S.C.) for 31 years.
