This hour long 16mm color film documents R/V Alpha Helix Billabong Expedition to Australia in 1966. R/V Alpha Helix was a floating biological laboratory operated by the Scripps Institution from 1966-1980. Billabong Expedition was undertaken March-November 1966 to conduct biological and physiological research on tropical mangroves, reef corals and sea and land animals at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The expedition included an international team of 44 scientists under chief scientists Per F. Scholander, Theodore H. Bullock, Francis T. Haxo and Harold T. Hammel. This silent film is accompanied by a ten page narrative description of the film which identifies scenes and individuals. The film includes an expedition track and aerial footage of the area of Australia under study, the Finders group of islands at the edge of Princess Charlotte Bay. The film includes footage of R/V Alpha Helix anchored at Stanley Island and the base camp established nearby. The film includes footage of Aboriginies Fred, Jake and Joe hired by the scientists to assist the expedition spearing turtles. The film includes footage of Great Barrier Reef flora and fauna. It includes footage of scientists spearing and studying a dugong and a python. The film includes footage of expedition scientists including Maurice Atkinson, Theodore H. Bullock, Shirley Jefferies, Leonard Muscatine, Baxter O'Brien, Bent Schmidt-Nielsen and Per F. Scholander.
