Papers of Boston commission merchant James M. Whiton consist primarily of records of the Boston, Concord (N.H.) and Montreal Railroad for which Whiton served as director. The records include correspondence, accounts, bills, and receipts related to the purchase of iron and financing for the railroad construction, stock, and day-to-day financial matters. Also, papers related to a legal dispute with the Connecticut and Passumsic River Railroad Co. over railroad lands in Vt., and reports of passengers and freight transported. Correspondents include Josiah Quincy, James N. Elkins, E.S. Stickney, Ira Goodall, and Charles Lane. The papers also include materials related to the formation of the Leyden Chapel in Boston in 1843 by members of the Salem St. Church (Congregational) and bills and receipts for Whiton's personal expenses.
