The records of the Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support (SOMTS) division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography document the work of the division which oversees the Chester W. Nimitz Marine Facility where SIO vessels are maintained and provides ship scheduling, foreign clearances and marine technical support. The records were generated under two administrators, George Shor and Robert L. Fisher. The records include documentation of R/V ALPHA HELIX and the Alpha Helix program in biological oceanography. The records include correspondence, memoranda, proposals, cruise reports, ship maintenance records and other material arranged in six series: Proposals, Marine Operations Committee Records, Expeditions, Vessels, Ships Scheduling, Clearances and ALPHA HELIX Program records. The records provide substantial documentation of vessel acquisition and maintenance, expedition goals and planning, ship operations, and clearances and permits to conduct oceanographic research abroad.

While SIO has operated research vessels since its founding in 1903, it did not have a research fleet until 1948, when SIO Marine Facilities was established. The Nimitz Marine Facility at Point Loma in San Diego was dedicated in 1966 to provide berthing for the SIO fleet. In 1974, Marine Facilities and various separate technician groups were organized into Ship Operations and Marine Technical Support (SOMTS). From the description of Records, 1948-1987, bulk 1974-1980.
