Henry Horner correspondence, 1933-1940.

Correspondence primarily concerns the Great Depression and attempts to combat it at the federal, state, and local levels (e. g. the Work Projects Administration; National Industrial Recovery Administration; Reconstruction Finance Corporation etc.) and other organizations (e.g. Mining Investigation Commission; Committee on Infantile Paralysis and Illinois Racing Commission etc.). Subjects mentioned within the correspondence include retailers' occupational tax, fuel oil, slot machines, public guardians, exposition and anniversary celebrations, soil conservation, Social Security, liquor, Spanish-American War Veterans' Fund, American Legion, claims and pensions, Sangamon County courthouse, State Fair, University of Illinois, boys' training schools, motor vehicle laws, urban population, delinquency, riots in Sangamon and Tazewell Counties, and special holidays for certain state employees. The files also contain extradition papers, budget estimates, messages to the General Assembly, and proclamations. Most of the letters are between local, state, and federal (e.g. Secretary of the Interior) officials.

Henry Horner (November 30, 1878 – October 6, 1940) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Governor of Illinois from January 1933 until his death. He was the first Jewish governor. Henry Horner (1878-1940), Democratic Governor of Illinois (1933-1940), was born on Nov. 30, 1878 in Chicago, Ill. When his parents divorced shortly after his birth, his mother resumed using her maiden name and changed her son's last name to Horner, too.
