Edward F. Dunne correspondence, 1913-1917.

File primarily contains material relating to the administration of the Spanish-American War Veterans' Fund which was set up in 1899 by Congress to compensate underpaid members of the Illinois National Guard activated during the conflict. In 1908, the fund account was transferred to the state with the Governor acting personally as the trustee. File includes a bank account book in the Governor's name, bank balance notifications, interest statements, statements of deposits and withdrawls, names of veterans who received payments, and amounts and dates of payments. The Auditor of Public Accounts and bank officials were primary correspondents.

Edward F. Dunne (1853-1937), Democratic Governor of Illinois (1913-1917), was born on Oct. 12, 1853 at Waterville, Conn. His family moved to Peoria, Ill., where he was educated in the Peoria public schools before entering Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.
