An artificial collection relating largely to Davis' military career. It includes correspondence; military appointments; orders and reports; memoirs; memorials; and photographs. The bulk of the materials pertain to Davis' Civil War service, his post-war career, and death. Included is a letter relating details of General Nelson's death, and an autobiographical account of Davis' military career. Photographs include Civil War portraits and activities. Correspondents include E.P. Buell, Edward Canby, A.C. McClurg, Lazarus Noble, John Pope, W.S. Rosencrans, P.H. Sheridan, and W.T. Sherman.

Davis was born in Clark County, Indiana, near present-day Memphis, Indiana. He was born to William Davis, Jr. (1800–1879) and Mary Drummond-Davis (1801–1881), the oldest of their eight children. His father was a farmer. His parents came from Kentucky, and like many of the time including President Abraham Lincoln's family, moved to Indiana. William F. Allee was born in Hendricks County, Ind., in 1844. He enlisted as a private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry Regiment, Company K, in 1861. Allee participated in every regimental engagement and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1865. After the war he married Eliza Merrill Parker and the couple raised four children.
