Gardiner-Whipple-Allen family papers, 1730-1882.

Two disbound scrapbooks compiled by Margaret A. (Allen) Elton containing papers of the interrelated Gardiner, Whipple, and Allen families. The papers consist of original documents; Elton's genealogical notes, manuscript annotations, and correspondence; clippings; engravings; printed material; photographs; and memorabilia. Among the family members most heavily represented in the collection are Elton's parents, Gardiner, Me. lawyer Frederic Allen and his wife Hannah Bowen (Whipple), Dr. Martin Gay (Allen's son-in-law), Oliver Whipple, William, Nathaniel, Robert H., and John S.J. Gardiner. Papers of Dr. Silvester Gardiner pertain to his role in the settlement of lands in the Kennebec Purchase (Me.), his flight from Boston during the Revolution and years spent as a Loyalist in England, attempts to reacquire his confiscated lands in Boston and Maine, and the settlement of his estate. Additional correspondents include Charles T. Jackson, Robert Hallowell, and members of the Dumaresq family.
