Relating to General Besson's career, the collection contains primary research material in the fields of transportation and logistics and also on the Army organization under Secretary McNamara. Among the 4,969 pages of letters and reports, 11 documents, 1,375 photographs, 3,135 slides, 12 audiotapes and 10 books are pieces of autograph value. Components of the archive are a letter signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, three documents signed by President Richard M. Nixon, a watercolor drawing of Spencer Carbine Model, 1860, prepared for the engraver, to have been presented to President John F. Kennedy, and photographs for the John Muir Trail series.

Son of a career Army officer, Frank S. Besson, Jr. was born in Detroit, Mich. in 1910. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1932, he was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. During his military career he served as Chief of the Allied Military Rail Service in Iran during World War II; as overseer of the Japanese railway system after World War II; and as the first commander of the U.S. Army Materiel Command.
