Letter, 1867 Sept 20, Charleston, S.C. [to] Alfred Ely, Rochester, N.Y.

Business letter to associate in New York lamenting destruction of fruit crops by caterpillars on sea islands and mainland, "the worm continues its ravages, and with ever increasing numbers...the third brood of which is out & where they have gained foot hold, are sweeping the fields." Letter written on verso of Charleston Commercial Circular and Prices Current, dated 20 Sept. 1867, a periodical printed with a blank leaf for use as stationery by businesses engaged in trade; publication lists current wholesale values of commodities including rice, oats, wheat, bacon, salt, naval stores, rope, "India bagging," freights, gold, etc. for the Charleston market; current values of commodities in various cities of the United States; quantities of sea island versus upland cotton and other goods exported to various destinations, and list of ships in port for the week ending Friday, 20 Sept. 1867.
