Letter, 1863 Oct. 4., Morris Island, S.C., to "Friend Spofford."

Letter commenting on the siege of Charleston, predicting that they will have to wait a long time before the city falls to Union forces, and expressing hope that General [Quincy Adams] Gillmore would burn the city; reporting strict orders against relaying military information in correspondence, and informing Spofford that news stories of Fort Moultrie's fall were incorrect, as were most of the other events reported. Other topics include news of activities of the fleet; his company's review "in honor of Major Gen. Gillmore," reporting that he has been in no danger for "I do nothing but write," and noting Lt. Col.
