On Feb. 3, 1809, the U. S. Congress approved an act that seperated Illinois from the Indiana Territory. In 1809, Illinois became a territory of the United States and, as such, had its governors appointed by the President of the United States. The territorial governor was Ninian Edwards who was succeeded by Shadrach Bond when Illinois became a state in 1818.
