Letters to parents, Thomas Jefferson Goodwyn and Eliza Elliott Darby Goodwyn, of Columbia, S.C., and others written, ca. 1858-1860, from various places in Charleston District, S.C., and Alabama, discussing social events and life as a school teacher; includes letter, 3 Oct. [18]60, Columbia, S.C., to Alfred, re secession crisis, and mood in Columbia surrounding the presidential election, including description of the "blue Cockade" worn as a symbol of support for secession. Later letters record Goodwyn's enlistment and participation in the Confederate army, including 1 Jan. 1861, Charleston, S.C., to [Mary] Eugenia [Goodwyn], re his tentative decision to join the Palmetto Guard; 29 May 1861, Bull Run, Prince William County, [Va.], to Mother, re arrival at Manassas, Va., mention of Capt. [William Henry] Wallace, and construction of breastworks; and 13 Oct. 1862, Duffields Depot, Jefferson County [West] Virginia, Silas Billings to [Eliza E.D. Goodwyn] recounting death of Goodwyn and last rites performed by Billings.
