James Marion Sims (1813-1883) was a surgeon and gynecologist who conducted experimental surgical procedures on enslaved women during the 1840s in Alabama. He later played a role in founding the Woman's Hospital (now a division of St. Luke's Hospital) in New York, N.Y. From the guide to the J.
