Gleason family papers, 1827-1880.

The collection contains records of the Warren Congregational Church and the Gleason family from Warren and Waitsfield, Vermont, during the period 1827-1880. The first folder contains records of the Congregational Church in Warren from 1827-1846. These include a confession of intemperance before the Church in 1828, a discussion of same, 1834-1838 church record of meetings, who preached, who joined and left the church. There are 1837 records on the formation of the Washington County Conference, to have delegates from Congregational churches in the county meet regularly. Church records of deaths and baptisms of 1830-1840 are included, a document of the beliefs of church members, two farewell addresses of a departing minister, and other records. The second and third folders contain Civil War records for Warren, including receipts for Civil War enlistments, certificates of muster, and lists of those that enlisted from the town. In the fourth folder there is a collection of documents related to Huzzial Gleason of Warren and Waitsfield including fire insurance policies of 1830 and 1870, deeds to land in Warren, 1836 and 1844, to land in Waitsfield, 1823 and 1825, three sheriff's orders regarding debts involving Gleason in 1845, and many Gleason accounts. These include a "license to sell spirituous liquors" in 1850, payment he made for a teacher in Warren, for a poor person residing in jail, and a certificate that he had married a couple as justice of the peace. The last folder contains an 1861 petition to make Richardson J. Gleason the Waitsfield postmaster.
