This collection contains the correspondence, 1857-1865, of John Overton Collins of Fluvanna County, Va. The bulk of the correspondence consists of letters, 1861-1864, from Collins to his wife, Catherine (Scruggs) Collins (1840?-1882), concerning his service in Company F of the 10th Virginia Cavalry Regiment. The letters include detailed descriptions of camp life during the Peninsula and 1862 Maryland campaigns, and Collins's experiences as a prisoner of war at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C., and at Point Lookout, Md. Also includes letters, 1864, from Catherine Collins to Confederate officials concerning her efforts to help gain a prisoner exchange for her husband.
