Dante Gabriel Rossetti letters, circa 1850-1877.

The collection contains six letters. In an undated letter, ca. early 1850s, from Blackfriars Bridge, Rossetti describes the classes in the new pre-Raphaelite art school he is leading; on 21 January 1874, he writes to J.A. Heaton about F.G. Stephens, art critic of the Athenaeum and supporter of Rossetti's pre-Raphaelite movement; on mourning stationery, 27 January 1877, Rossetti writes to Charles Rowley, partner with Frederic James Shields in English Picture Publishing Company, about receiving payment for his drawing "Silence" and printing proof of the "Lady at the Window" drawing; to Mrs. Sumner, undated, sending her a few prospectuses of Shields's Triumph of Faith series, and thanks her for remembering Shields's Illustrations to Pilgrim's progress.

The minor artist Frederic Shields (of Manchester and London) moved in Pre-Raphaelite circles. He was a reliable friend, particularly to D.G.
