The papers include a will, 1798, of William Lindsay, of Newport, R.I.; diary fragments, 1819-1820, of Judith Lomax, Port Royal, Va., regarding Christian virtue, a missionary's departure for Africa, and a funeral for an infant; and a letter, 31 January 1839, from Richard Parker, Richmond, Va., to Elizabeth Winter Lomax, regarding the Revolutionary War service of her father, William Lindsay, and land claims arising from his service. A letter, 3 August 1844, from Richard Randolph, Washington, D.C., to Elizabeth Winter Lomax, regards a point of law in the settlement of William Lindsay's estate. Two letters, December 1863, from Captain and Provost Marshall John Cassels, Fort Monroe, Va., for General Butler, to Nannie Lomax, concern her request to see the Secretary of War. A draft of a statement, ca. 1863, from Nannie Lomax, protests the arrest and banishment of her sister and herself. Also included are a letter, 4 March 1932, from Brooke Payne, University of Virginia, to Lindsay Lomax, soliciting funds to mark the gravesite of William Payne, with a genealogical chart on verso; and miscellaneous papers, n.d., regarding the Payne family.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler.
