Papers documenting her efforts to purchase and preserve the home of George Washington in Fairfax County, Va., and the founding of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association; includes letter, 20 Apr. 1854, from I[sabel] S. Snowden, Charleston [S.C.], written in response to Cunningham's appeal for funds to preserve Mount Vernon, questioning Congress' lack of interest in purchasing the property, but reluctantly declining assistance, and noting their work on behalf of the Calhoun Monument Association; and letter, 10 Apr. 1860, [typescript copy], Mrs. Robert [Louisa] Cunningham, expressing disapproval of her daughter's plans and activities, and relating difficulties at home. Other correspondents include B.L. Barne, Mary [Cox] Chesnut, Sally Chesnut, R.C. Gilchrist, John Quinlon, G.R. Riley, and Mary Amarintha Yates Snowden. Also includes undated typescript copy of epitaphs of Cunningham family; and 7 photostatic copies of newspaper clippings, 1900-1936, some undated, biographical and genealogical information re Cunningham, her preservation work, and her family home, Rosemont; includes articles written by Elizabeth W. Ann Pamela Cunningham (August 15, 1816 in Rosemont Plantation, South Carolina – May 1, 1875) was an early activist in historic preservation who founded The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1853 and served for years as its first regent. She gained participation by women leaders from all 30 states of the Union at that time.
