Papers of George Conrad Westervelt, 1879-1956.

The collection contains correspondence, manuscripts and photographs chiefly pertaining to Westervelt's work in China for the China National Aviation Corporation, a partner of Curtiss-Wright. Correspondence discusses Westervelt's work and the Chinese and Japanese military conflict. Topics include negotiations with Chinese officials; Chinese politics, economics and daily life; cultural biases of American personnel; bandit raids; Chinese negotiations with Germans for airplane manufacture; Japanese bombing, invasion and armistice, 1932; opium cultivation and the sale of two children. General Chiang Kai-Shek is mentioned in an undated letter about Chinese-Japanese negotiations and chaos in the Chinese government. There is an essay "Shanghai to Chungking and return" about a business trip up the Yangtze River in 1931 to discuss possibilities of a mail and passenger air route to Chungking; and a melodrama "Mongolia," 1925, by Westervelt. Miscellaneous items include a letter from artist Howard Everett Giles, and photographs and other items pertaining to Elizabeth Dortch Emory.
