Originally from Tennessee, John Tipton and his family moved to Harrison County, Indiana in 1807. Tipton was active in territorial government, served as a militia officer, politician, Indian agent, and land speculator. In March, 1823, he was appointed Indian agent at Fort Wayne and served as a commissioner to negotiate a treaty with the Miami and Pottawatomie in 1826.
