The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). Born in Hamilton, New York on April 23, 1814, Bela Hubbard was the son of Thomas H. Hubbard. He came to Detroit in 1835. Bela Hubbard married Sarah E. Baughman of Adrian, Michigan on March 2, 1848.
