Claude Halstead Van Tyne was born October 16, 1869, at Tecumseh, Michigan, to Lawrence M. and Helen (Rosacrans) Van Tyne. He attended the University of Michigan and received the A.B. degree in 1896. He then studied at Heidelberg, Leipzig and Paris, 1897-1898, and earned the Ph.D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1900. Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990.
