Eliza Maria Mosher was born October 2, 1846 in Cayuga County, New York. After attending the New England Hospital for Women and Children, she enrolled at the University of Michigan Department of Medicine and Surgery, graduating in 1875. In 1877, after a year in private practice, she was made resident physician at the Massachusetts State Reformatory Prison for Women. She was later appointed superintendent.
