Series in the collection include: biographical material, notably unpublished biography and personal diaries, 1858-1868 and 1872-1881; business records of various Scripps newspapers and publishing companies; George H. Scripps probate records; and James E. Scripps trust records.

James E. Scripp, journalist, newspaper publisher, author. Born in London, came to Rushville, Ill., in 1844 and attended business college in Chicago. In 1857 worked for the Chicago Tribune and then the staff of the Detroit Daily Advertiser (in 1859). Established the Detroit Evening News which became the Detroit Daily News in 1873, and soon became the leading paper in Michigan.
