Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago. John Dewey was born on October 20, 1859 in Burlington, Vermont and graduated in 1879 from The University of Vermont. After graduation Dewey taught high school and published in the Journal of Speculative Philosophy. In 1884 Dewey resumed his studies and earned a Ph. D. from John Hopkins University.
