Correspondence and legal documents of a cotton planter in India; including 25 Apr. 1840, Fairfield District, S.C., legal agreement of James Morris of Chicot County, Ark., granting power of attorney to Elisha Morris, noting the need to collect some $5700 owed to Morris by two men in Natchez, Miss; letter, 26 Dec. 1842, to "My Dear Brother" [Ephriam Morris], Monticello, S.C., re disappointments sustained during his first three years in India, describing unsuccessful attempts to cultivate cotton, discussing impressions of Indian culture, with remarks on religion, people, sati, and the caste system. Also includes Morris' will, 15 Mar. 1846, Travellers Bungallow, Bellary [District, now State of Karnataka], Madras Presidency, East India, appointing as executor William R. Mercer, of Bombay Presidency, directing the disposal of his estate held by Hall, Brainbridge & Co., Merchants, and valued at "16,000 Company Rupees" to be divided among his eight brothers and sisters identified by name, with individual bequests of various personal items of gold; letter, ca. Mar. 1846, Rooskul, Dharwar District, Bombay Pres[idency], W[illiam] R. Mercer to Ephraim Morris, [Darlington?, S.C.], informing family of death of James Morris, enclosing will, discussing arrangements for disposing of the estate, promising to return to the U.S. to deliver the inheritance, and reporting that sale of Morris' horse realized "a very small sum, 170 Rupees, Equal to $75."
