James Lowndes papers, 1861 July 26-Oct. 23.

Photocopies of Civil War letters re activities of the Hampton Legion in camp and at the Battle of Manassas, Va.; including 26 July 1861, McLane's Farm near Manassas, to Cousin Mattie, re meeting Carolina friends and acquaintances on the battlefield, Gen. [P.G.T.] Beauregard's effect on the men, Wade Hampton's wound, and the performance of soldiers younger than 18 years of age; other places represented include "Camp Johnson near Manassas" and "Bacon Race Church." Other letters include 23 Oct. 1861, Headquarters near Dumfries [Va.], to Cousin Harriet, re his locality, including description of nearby [Beverley] mill built of stone by an early settler; describing the village often visited by [George] Washington; relating an exploit of Col. [L.T.] Wigfall and "his wild Texans"; noting comfortable quarters provided for the wife of Gen. [William Henry Chase] Whiting in a tent; discussing discipline and morale of the troops, and receipt of rifled cannons and Enfieled rifles; and remarking on [Brig. Gen. James] Johnston Pettigrew's high standing with the officers.
