James Davis papers, 1797 Oct. 16-1867.

Papers include document, 16 Oct. 1797, signed by Davis' father- in-law, Laurens District physician George Ross, certifying Davis' successful completion of "Study of Physic" and commending his moral and religious character; abstracts copied from "Practice Book of Dr. James Davis, 1812," listing brief notes re prescriptions and prices charged for care of families, slaves, and students at South Carolina College. Also includes letter, 25 June 1837, Columbia, S.C., to Dr. John H[ainey] Davis, Huntsville, Laurens District, S.C., re Davis' suffering with bronchitis, considering a visit to Wilson's Spring, a "sulpherated hydrogen" watering hole located sixteen miles from Limestone, S.C., lamenting the decline in the price of cotton, noting that Cresswell had sold his crop to Liverpool before the price fell, while Davis' crop remained unsold in Charleston; inquiring if J.H. Davis knew of an available overseer for his Fairfield District plantation [New Lands], defining his criteria, and despairing of the economic future, with planters indebted to the banks. Collection also includes photostatic copy of pages from an 1867 medical book, quoting material originally published in 1822, re Davis' experiements, ca. 1814, in Columbia, S.C., using vaccination to prevent small-pox.
