Collection includes correspondence, 1933-1990, school materials, writings, research on African-American families and children, newspaper clippings, biographical materials, and miscellaneous papers of Lettie Marie (Coleman) Madison of Montclair, N.J., and Richmond, Va., concerning her education at Dana College (now Rutgers University), Newark, N.J., and Fordham University, New York City; her career as a psychiatric social worker at Essex County Overbrook Hospital, Cedar Grove, N.J., and as a faculty member of the Department of Social Work at Virginia Union University, Richmond; and her life in retirement in Richmond, with reminiscences of that city and of Hampton Institute, Hampton, Va.

Lettie Marie Coleman, an African American born in Montpelier, Va., attended Hampton Institute Academy in Hampton, Va. Earning degrees at Dana College (now Rutgers University), Newark, N.J., and from the School of Social Service at Fordham University, New York City, she pursued a career in social work and eventually founded the Department of Social Work at Virginia Union University in Richmond.
