Collection consists primarily of the correspondence, 1836-1870, of Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart (1807-1891), lawyer of Staunton, Va., member of the Virginia General Assembly and United States House of Representatives, and secretary of the Interior in the administration of Millard Fillmore, with his wife, Frances Cornelia (Baldwin) Stuart (1815- 1885), and with clients, political colleagues, fellow attorneys, and constituents; materials, 1855-1857, concerning the sale of the health resort facilities at the White Sulphur Springs, Va. (now W. Va.); notes concerning legal and political subjects; and miscellaneous papers. Also, includes letters, 1828-1876, written to Frances Cornelia (Baldwin) Stuart primarily by family members; and scattered correspondence of other members of the Stuart family.

The Alaska Public Works Program was authorized during the 81st Congress through the Alaska Public Works Act, Public Law 264.
