Sir John Fortescue, a prominent scholar of Greek and Latin, became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1589. Fortescue became wealthy through his office and connections to the Custom House. Queen Elizabeth granted Fortescue a number of land grants and in 1601 he became Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. From the description of Order of the Exchequer, 1602 April 30.
