Jay Cooke (1821-1905) founded the investment banking house of Jay Cooke and Company in Philadelphia in 1861. During the Civil War Cooke played a leading role in selling government bonds to finance the war effort. The firm failed in 1873 partly because of Cooke's involvement in financing construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The firm of Charles D.
