The Arthur L. Bakke Papers include biographical information, clippings, ISU committee files, correspondence, research field books, note books, manuscripts, manuscripts translated from Danish, experiment station bulletins, and photographs. The largest part of the collection is Bakke's personal and professional correspondence. Included are letters from the Ames Land Company; C.E. Brindley, an ISU economics professor who was a partner in a land venture; Iowa State University Librarian, Charles Harvey Brown; Robert E. Buchanan; Hahn Muscatine Company, a gravel firm in which Bakke invested; the Osborn Research Club; Louis H. Pammel; Raymond A. Pearson; H.S. Smith related to the experiment station at Hawarden, Iowa (1936-1940); E.W. Stanton; and genealogy from the Studt family, his mother's family. The correspondence files contain agricultural advice and information related to the effects of artificial light on crops (1919), European bindweed and other weeds, and related to the early use of 2,4-D. Bakke's publications relate to the transpiring power of plants, soil nutrients, weed control, and small grains. There are also drafts of his research and unpublished materials including a "Report of the Winneshiek Drainage Project," a plan by the U.S. War Dept. to drain Mississippi River bottom lands. Notebooks and fieldbooks include Hawarden experiment station research, notes and expenses for 1935-1944. The ISU committee files are from the Fraternity Committee (1921-1926), the Short Course Committee, and the State Fair Committee (1920-1927).
