Correspondence of John Francis Poulton, a dentist and Methodist minister of Loudoun County, Va., and throughout Virginia, concerning family and friends; courtship, marriage, and the death of his first wife, Rosannah (Davisson) Poulton; his life as an itinerant preacher and the uncertain status of the southern Methodist Church after the Civil War; attendance at church conferences; and a complaint against Poulton brought before the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, concerning his conduct towards a new Methodist minister assigned to Warrenton, Va. Chief correspondents include his first wife, Rosannah (Davisson) Poulton, concerning courtship, family and friends, and the Christian lifestyle, and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Derrickson (Wickes) Davisson, concerning the deaths of her daughter and her husband, Frederick Augustus Davisson, the remarriage of John Francis Poulton, and the future of her grandchildren.
