The Pantheon is the most fascinating building of Roman antiquity and has been deeply admired from late antiquity to the present day. Yet its design has been much criticized, and the intention of its builders remains mysterious. Its historical antecedents and technical features continue to be debated, and such basic elements as the origins of its plan and its very name are contested. Lecturer Mark Wilson Jones, architect and architectural historian with the University of Bath, England, explores issues of the building's date, design, and construction in the light of recent research that resolves some of the problems.
