Born in Norwich, Conn. 22 Jan.. 1786. Moved to Buffalo in 1811 with George Coit, his partner in the drug business, and later in ship building and transportation. George Coit and Judge Townsend came to Buffalo from Norwich, Conn. in 1811 and established a drug store. They continued their partnership with a storage and forwarding business. Coit was a member of the Buffalo Historical Society, the Buffalo Board of Trade and the Water Works Company. Nathaniel Townsend, born in New Haven, Conn., moved to Norwich where he established himself as a barber and merchant. His son Charles moved to Buffalo with George Coit in 1811. Life-long business associates, Townsend and Coit operated a drugstore and engaged in shipbuilding and transportation. Townsend served as a Niagara County judge from 1813-1826.
