Papers, 1945-1991, bulk 1960-1991.

The collection consists of the papers of James Ronald Stewart, who served as diving officer for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1960-1991. During this period, Stewart developed scuba diving training procedures, equipment standards and diving manuals that became a model for scientific diving in the United States and influenced diving practice internationally. He worked closely with federal government agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Navy as federal diving regulations were developed. The collection includes documentation of diving programs, diving conditions in speciic areas, diving physiology, diving accidents, diving suits, decompression, shark attacks, underwater communication and other subjects related to research diving. The collection includes correspondence, subject files, teaching materials, lectures, conference materials, photographs, diving logs, safety manuals, reports, bibliographies and other documentation of the history of scientific diving and scuba diving at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and elsewhere in the United States. Most of the material in this collection was generated by Stewart, but the collection also includes some files of his predecessor, Conrad Limbaugh. The collection includes correspondence exchanged with Hugh Bradner, Jacquest Yves Cousteau, Robert Livingston, Boyd Walker, Charles Wheelock and others.
