Letters concerning payments for land purchases include date, purchaser's name, quarter section, section, township, and range. Some letters mention the trial of Gen. William Hull who was accused of treason during the War of 1812. The register of the Zanesville land office was ordered to attend the trial.

An act of Congress dated May 10, 1800, established federal land offices in Steubenville, Cincinnati, Chillicothe, and Marietta to facilitate the sale of land in the Northwest Territory. The last federal land office in Ohio at Chillicothe closed in 1876 and all federal land office records were transferred to the Auditor of State's Office in 1877. William Hull (1753-1825) was a lawyer and a soldier. He served in the Revolutionary War and afterwards in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Brigadier-General. In 1805 he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory. In 1812 he was court-martialed and cashiered from the Army because of the failure of his campaign into Canada against the British.
