Papers, 1729-1970.

Chiefly papers of Louise (Anderson) Patten (1880-1973) of Berkeley and Riverside, Calif., and Winchester, Va., including correspondence, 1913-1970; theater programs, 1908-1952, concerning performances in California and Virginia, and newspaper clippings, 1904- 1962, illuminating her career as an actress and director. Three notebooks, ca. 1900-1901, kept as a student at the Emerson College of Oratory (now Emerson College) in Boston, Mass., and a commonplace book, 1906, reflect her education. Also included are speeches, ca. 1925-1953, a brief autobiography, and a few genealogical notes, as well as two cookbooks, 1891 and ca. 1895, belonging to Maria Burwell (Carter) Anderson (1855- 1931) of Berkeley and Riverside, Calif., and a cookbook, ca. 1910, of Gwynn Page (Anderson) Whipple (1882-1943) of Riverside, Calif. About one-third of the collection pertains to various Carter, Page, and Burwell family members. Among eighteenth-century Carter family papers are land records concerning the Northern Neck proprietary; correspondence, 1733-1748, of John Carter (1690-1742) of Corotoman in Lancaster County, Va.; papers, 1789-1808, of Robert Wormeley Carter (1734- 1797) of Sabine Hall in Richmond County; and information on rents of Carter lands in Frederick County, Va. Page family materials include correspondence, 1809-1834, of Mary (Tayloe) Page (1759-1835) with family members and friends. Burwell family materials include accounts, 1816- 1833, concerning Lewis Burwell's (1784-1867) involvement in the Ashby's Gap Turnpike Company; a scrapbook, 1834-1842, belonging to Roberta Page Burwell (1813-1856) and correspondence, 1870-1940, and other papers of Mann Page Carter (1850-1942).
