Rickenbacker, a native of Columbus, Ohio, was the United States' leading fighter pilot in World War I with twenty-six confirmed victories. After the war, he worked for several automobile and airline companies before joining Eastern Air Transport, later Eastern Air Lines, in 1934. He was the company's president from 1938 to 1959 and chairman of the board until his retirement in 1964. Correspondence between Rickenbacker and his son, William, and between William Rickenbacker and his mother, Adelaide Durant Rickenbacker; agreements (1918-1919) with Rickenbacker's publishers; transcripts of letters (1964) from Adelaide Rickenbacker; copy photographs (1918-1943) of Rickenbacker during World War I and World War II, and of the Rickenbacker family; photo albums (1920s-1981); obituaries and letters of condolence (1973) upon Rickenbacker's death; correspondence concerning a Rickenbacker commemorative stamp. Travel journal (1922) kept by Rickenbacker during his honeymoon.
