Consists primarily of the papers of Francis Williamson Smith (1838-1865) of Norfolk, Va. His correspondence, 1846-1865, includes letters to and from his wife, Anna Maria Dandridge (Deans) Smith (1839- 1926?), concerning family news, social life in Norfolk, and war news; letters to his father-in-law, Josiah Lilly Deans (b. 1811), discussing the Civil War in Virginia, and offering advice on the financial benefits of investing in slaves; and letters to his parents describing his life as a student in France. Also includes the correspondence, 1858, of John Marsden Smith (1803?-1889) with his wife, Anne Walke (Williamson) Smith (1816-1859), concerning family and social news from Norfolk; correspondence, 1861- 1887, of Anna Maria Dandridge (Deans) Smith with family and friends concerning the impact of the Civil War on her family; and papers of her daughter, Anna Maria Dandridge (Smith) Yeatman (1864-1953), including a commonplace book, 1915, containing notes on the 1849 voyage of the "Glenmore," bound for the California, essays, 1915-1920, on the 1849 gold rush and on Gloucester County, Va. history, and speeches, 1915-1929, discussing family history, Afro-American life in the nineteenth century, and Colonial society. Also includes miscellaneous papers of other Smith family members, and genealogical notes concerning the Deans, Newton, Smith, Villou, Walke, and Yeatman families.
