Eighteenth century Virginia papers, 1775-1787.

Letter, 1775, from the West Augusta Committee of Safety at Fort Dunmore, to the Colonial Convention in Richmond, Va., informing the Convention of a treaty with the Chiefs of the Six Nations and the Delawares, mentioning boundary dispute between Pennsylvania and Virginia, and reporting the arrest of Major John Connolly by Pennsylvania authorities, with resolution thanking Capt. James Gibson for taking control of the fort in the absence of Major Connolly. Letter, 1787, from Charles Lee, Alexandria, Va., to Beverley Randolph, Lt. Governor of Virginia, relating incident of attempting to seize the schooner Dart and arrest the ship's Captain Dodds for customs violations and smuggling between Virginia and Maryland.

Dr. John Connoly was born in Pennsylvania in 1743. He trained as a doctor and moved to the American frontier in 1762. He came to Pittsburgh in 1774, where he sided with Virginia during the boundary dispute between that province and Pennsylvania. His actions in Pittsburgh led to violence between white settlers along the frontier and the Indian nations of the Ohio country.
