Papers of Sir Henry Unton, 1474-1645 (bulk 1591-1610).

Include diaries, 1591 and 1595-1596, of Sir Henry Unton, concerning his daily activities as English ambassador at the French Court, audiences with Queen Elizabeth I and King Henry IV, meetings with English and French officials, and hostilities and travel in France; lists of his attendants in 1591 and 1595; copy of warrant and indenture, 1591, transferring royal silver plate to his keeping, with descriptive list of the plate; and manuscript transcripts of the diaries and a brief biography. Also include contemporary manuscript copies of documents pertaining to the Virginia Company of London: the second charter, 1609, granted by King James I; the commission granted to Lord De La Warr, 1610; instructions, orders, and constitutions, 1609, to Sir Thomas Gates, Governor of Virginia; instructions, orders, and constitutions, 1609/10, to Lord De La Warr; and manuscript transcripts of these documents. Also include lists, 1588 and 1590, of Roman Catholic cardinals, including ages, country of origin, and date created cardinal and by which pope; and lists, ca. 1595, concerning statistical information about Spain, such as food production, strength of army and navy, and wealth of nobles and church officials, with full title of the King of Spain and the Great Turk. Also include list, 1603, of men created Knights of the Bath at King James I's coronation; notes, n.d., in Latin concerning information about the Kings of Scotland, chiefly about oaths of fealty to the English monarchs; and note, n.d., concerning the four degrees of esquires. Also include copy of indenture, 1474, between commissioners of the Kings of England and Scotland re: articles of the marriage contract between the son of the King of Scotland and the daughter of the King of England; and copy of the printed copy, 1645, of Lord Thomas Fairfax's letter concerning the capture of Dartmouth, with list of prisoners taken.
