Papers of the Stoddard family, 1860-1903.

Collection includes letters, business papers, school certificates and diplomas, tax receipts and a pair of eyeglasses. In a letter, 1863 December 21, John Newton Pierce, Richmond, writes to Miss Lizzie Brown, Staunton, mentioning camp life in the 19th Virginia Regiment (Company A). Of interest are two oaths of allegiance to the United States, 1864 and 1865, signed by H.M. Stoddard and an Internal Revenue license for Stoddard's Staunton, Va., tailoring business. Included is a document, 1861 October 28, signed by five Confederate soldiers giving Power of Attorney to Lt. William P. Cooper, 31st Regiment, Virginia Volunteers, so that Cooper may attempt to collect their back wages from the Confederate Army.
