Papers of Peyton Short, 1939-ca. 1965.

The collection includes a letter, 1939 Dec 29, from Franklin D. Roosevelt, The White House, to Short discussing Short's "suggestion of safeguarding and promoting democratic ideals" by organizing local clubs to combat "the spread of anti-democratic propaganda." Roosevelt expresses approval and stresses that such organizations should have no connection with the government. In related letters to Short, 1956, President Ramon Magsaysay of the Philippines and Lim Yew Hock, Chief Minister of Singapore discuss the work of the World University Service. In a letter, 1960 June 15, Edgar Whitehead, Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia praises Short's work with the Commonwealth Society for the Deaf. Also included is a pamphlet describing Short's career.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He was the son of James (lawyer, financier) and Sara (Delano) Roosevelt. He married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt on March 17, 1905, and had six children: Anna, James, Franklin, Elliott, Franklin Jr., John. He received his B.A. from Harvard in 1904 and later attended Columbia University Law School.
