Swiss-American zoologist and geologist. Professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University. Louis Agassiz was born in Môtier-en-Vuly, Switzerland. James Henry Hammond (1807-1864) was a lawyer and planter, and an early advocate of nullification and secession. He was Democratic governor of South Carolina for the period 1842 to 1844, and was a U.S. Senator, for the period 1857 to 1860. As a senator he began to doubt the wisdom of secession.
