Include letters, 1861-64, from Louis A. Wise and John B. Wise to family members, chiefly Nellie Wise. They write mostly of camp life: small necessities they would like, their health, reading, furlough requests, outrage at Federal action in the Shenandoah Valley, rumors of campaigns elsewhere, and John's dog, Stonewall. Several letters condole Nellie on her father's death. Campaigns and battles mentioned include Cold Harbor, Globe Tavern, the Peninsular Campaign, Savage's Station, the evacuation of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Gettysburg campaign and battle, the Wilderness, and Kelly's Ford. Of special interest are a soldier's adaption of Dixie, a mention of Union Afro-American troops, and a letter describing the march to Pennsylvania, superstitions of the Confederate troops on crossing the Potomac, and the farms and personal appearance of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
